“Grace!” I whisper-shout as I walk down the historical romance aisle of The Secret Door, a local secondhand bookstore that Grace frequents. She jumps, dropping the book she was holding.

She jerks her head toward me with a scowl. “Don’t sneak up on a woman in a bookstore!” Her admonishments don’t faze me. I’m in emergency mode. Code red, or blue, or whatever is the very worst code. I’m not into those medical dramas, and I always zone out when Bennett starts talking about the hospital he works at as a surgical resident.

“I have an emergency!” I blurt, and she rolls her eyes while gently placing the book back on the shelf as if it’s a Fabergé egg instead of a discount paperback.

“What happened?” Her voice sounds like she’s over my drama, and I’m sure she is. But she signed up to be my BFFL—best friend for life—which means she’s got to put up with all my crazy till we’re buried in matching pink caskets. I haven’t told her about the matching caskets idea yet, mainly because she might finally wise up and run away from me. I’ll save that for maybe our 30th friendiversary.

“Sterling picked me up!” I shriek, and her eyes widen.

“We need privacy.” She grabs my arm and drags me toward the cozy reading lounge that contributes to the namesake of The Secret Door. She pulls on a copy of The Chronicles of Narnia, and the bookshelf swings open to reveal a small room that smells of cinnamon.

Large vintage chairs situated about the room and a plush sectional pressed into the corner compliment this secret space. Small antique wooden tables are scattered around to hold coffee cups and desserts from the adjoining coffee shop. Since it’s a Tuesday afternoon, and most people are working instead of hanging out in a secret room at a bookstore, the empty room gives us the privacy Grace wants.

“Tell me everything,” she says while pulling me down onto the sectional. I tuck my feet underneath me and face her. I relay every part of the paintball event and even share the almost-kiss from yesterday. I hadn’t told her that story yet, and she immediately hits me for withholding it. I kept it to myself so I could think about it, but all my thoughts are a basket of yarn someone threw a feral cat into. Not pretty.

I sigh as I finish detailing the past two days, “Everyone in the office is going to be talking about us.”

“So what?” Grace shrugs, and I pull a face at her.

“What do you mean? There’s going to be so many rumors, and everyone is going to look at me weird. They’ll probably think I’m trying to sleep my way to the top or something.” My stomach clenches just thinking about it, and I press a hand to my abdomen. I hate the thought of people disliking me, but even worse than that is them having the wrong idea about me. I’ve worked too hard to have people think of me in that way.
